Students and staff suspended from Middlesex

Four students and three members of staff have been suspended following the one day occupation of the library at Middlesex. The students have responded with a ‘I am Spartacus’ campaign and published photos of themselves on the web. Overall the campaign to save the Philosophy department has received a phenomenal amount of support from academics and groups and most recently from the UCU.

Middlesex keep on fighting

Tonight students and staff have occupied the library at Trent Park campus.

Proof that the campaign continues after their twelve-day occupation ended on Friday 14th May after the University management served a High Court injunction to end the protest.

Middlesex still in occupation

It’s all happening at Middlesex University. The occupation of the boardroom at Trent Park expanded to take over the whole of the main building on the Trent Park campus (the Mansion building). Although the university has confirmed their decision to close the department the students are still organising. Occupation at Middlesex University

Students and lecturers at Middlesex University (Trent Campus) have occupied their Dean’s office in a bid to stop the closure of the philosophy department. You can send messages of solidarity to savemdxphil@gmail.com or 07799 156 481 or check out their website. The occupiers are demanding a meeting with the dean after a proposed one was cancelled.

Uni and College Mass Strike May 5th 2010

A massive strike will hit four universities and eleven FE colleges tomorrow, as lecturers stand up against job cuts. It’s a UCU strike so look for more information on their website.

Westerminster Uni Occupation over cuts and closures

Apologies for the late posting. I just noticed that Westminster University held an occupation in March to protest against cuts and course closures. Although unsuccessful in terms of reversing the decision the protest was successful in uniting students in protest. Staff at the university entered a ballot to decide whether they should strike or not on April 20th and the verdict was that they should.

Worldwide protests against cuts in education

There has been a flurry of occupations against cuts in higher education. On the Sowimax site from Innsbruck Austria, you can see a map of all the occupations so far. A site called Emancipating Education for all has been set up to encourage discussion between the groups. There is also a wiki which has been set up to enable information sharing. You can find a list of occupied university there. To see what has been happening at some of the occupations - check out Rotterdam and Austria.

In England we have Free Education for all as well as the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.

Sussex University occupied

On February 8th students at Sussex occupied the top floor of Bramber House. The occupation which was in protest to the staff redundancies and course cuts at the university ended 10th February. The campaign continues - you can contact them at sussexstopthecuts@gmail.com

There has been a lot of anger in the student community over the proposed cuts in staff at universities. Check out the website of the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts to see what they discussed at their conference on 6th February.

Keeping occupations going

This site was set up in response to the student occupations over Israeli military action against Palestine in December 2008. The site is rarely updated now but is being kept running for reference purposes.

Nationalise Vestas

Keep abreast of what is happening at the Vestas plant on the occupiers’ website. At the moment the plant has been closed and the workers made redundant. Although some of the workers occupied they were evicted from the premise. The workers are now ‘fighting to nationalise the plant or save it by getting another manufacturer in to take it over’.
