On the 8th April French students outraged by President Sarkozy’s plans for reforming universities occupying offices on two campuses and barricading a Paris street and university administrators in Orleans, Rennes, and Strasbourg were held hostage for a brief time.
In honour of the 1968 student protests in Paris, and the expression “sous les pavés, la plage” (under the cobblestones, the beach) - the protesters turned Boulevard Saint-Michel into a beach for a short while.
Student anger at the proposed changes has been mounting over the last few months and especially over the last 10 weeks.
Protests continue and the French government estimate that 20 to 25 universities out of 83 are still affected by the protests.
